Children and HIV:Family Support First-Working together to achieve universal support and access to treatment

SYMPOSIUM OVERVIEW

Children and HIV: Family Support First - Working Together to Achieve Universal Support and Access to Treatment is an international symposium that will present the latest evidence and share the latest models on family-centered care and services for children affected by HIV and AIDS. The underlying theme for the symposium is based on the findings of The Joint Learning Initiative on Children and AIDS which demonstrated how central and under-supported families are in their care of children affected by HIV and AIDS. The two-day symposium, jointly hosted by The Teresa Group, the Coalition on Children Affected by AIDS (CCABA), and World Vision Austria, will be held on July 16th & 17th 2010 at the Austria Center in Vienna. The symposium will bring together close to 600 service providers, donors, researchers, advocates and policy leaders working within affected communities on national, regional and global platforms. It will promote opportunities for stronger linkages between program design and implementation, policy, research, and advocacy efforts. This think-tank and networking opportunity is for anyone working on issues related to children and HIV/AIDS and is concerned about how to improve local, national and international responses.

XVIII International Aids Conference-AIDS 2010-Rights Here, Right Now International Aids Society

The International AIDS Conference is the premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as policy makers, persons living with HIV and other individuals committed to ending the pandemic. It is a chance to assess where we are, evaluate recent scientific developments and lessons learnt, and collectively chart a course forward. Given the 2010 deadline for universal access set by world leaders, AIDS 2010 will coincide with a major push for expanded access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. With a global economic crisis threatening to undermine public investments, the conference will help keep HIV on the front burner, and is a chance to demonstrate the importance of continued HIV investments to broader health and development goals. AIDS 2010 is also an opportunity to highlight the critical connection between human rights and HIV; a dialogue begun in earnest in Mexico City in 2008.The selection of the AIDS 2010 host city is a reflection of the central role Vienna has played in bridging Eastern and Western Europe, and will allow for an examination of the epidemic’s impact in Eastern Europe. The AIDS 2010 programme will present new scientific knowledge and offer many opportunities for structured dialogue on the major issues facing the global response to HIV. A variety of session types – from abstract-driven presentations to symposia, bridging sessions and plenaries – will meet the needs of various participants. Other related activities, including the Global Village, satellite meetings, exhibitions and affiliated events, will contribute to an exceptional opportunity for professional development and networking. Following the success of the pilot programme at AIDS 2008, the XVIII International AIDS Conference will provide or facilitate hubs (centres) where selected sessions of the conference will be screened, to increase the access to the conference programme.

Pacific AIDS Network Core Training

We’re very excited to announce that PAN will be hosting another Level I - Core PHA Leadership Development Training in B.C. on November 26 - 29, 2010 at Loon Lake, Maple Ridge, BC. This will be the third Level I training to be held in B.C. The Code of Conduct/Financial Guidelines and the Application Form is attached to this email.

The Level I Core Training has proven to be a huge success in B.C and the training is truly helping PHAs to realize their individual leadership potential and helping to strengthen a network of PHA leaders in the province.

What is the Positive Leadership Development Institute?

The Positive Leadership Development Institute is a three level training for people living with HIV and offers PHAs an opportunity to identify and develop leadership skills. Currently B.C. provides Level I training, but once a number of participants have graduated from Level I we will be moving forward to offer both Level II and Level III in B.C.

The Level I Core Training seeks to answer the question: “Who am I as a Leader?” The three main goals of Level I are:

1. To identify personal values and philosophy;

2. To develop leadership skills and practices;

3. To gain community knowledge and awareness.

The curriculum objectives for Level I are for participants to have the opportunity:

To understand the 5 principles and 10 commitments of leadership

To realize individual leadership potential

To participate in building a network of leaders within the PHA community

To realize the potential and strengths that each individual brings to the network

To learn about and practice leadership skills in a safe environment

To inspire others to become leaders

To encourage participants to take on facilitator and mentoring roles within the community

To expand participants awareness of our community

IMPORTANT: It must be emphasized that the PHA Leadership Training is a professional development opportunity - not a retreat. The training will take place over the course of four days – and these days are very structured and intensive. While there are scheduled breaks, the days are quite long and people attending the training are expected to be present and participating for the duration. This training is therefore recommended for people whose physical and mental health is at a place that they can fully participate.

To learn more about the Positive Leadership Development Institute and its origins at the Ontario AIDS Network (OAN) please visit the PAN website at http://www.pacificaidsnetwork.org

HIV Evolution,Genomics,and Pathogenesis (x7)

Part of the Keystone Symposia Global Health Series,Supported BY THE BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION.Sponsored by Gilead Sciences,Inc

Organizers:Micheal Emerman, Melissa Robbiani (Pope) and Amalio Telenti

Meeting Summary

Elucidating the molecular mechanisms of HIV pathogenesis relies on understanding the complex interplay between the virus and its host. Increasingly, the field is relying on the power of comparative studies of similar viruses in other species, and on whole genome analyses to elucidate which pathways are critical. The use of evolutionary analyses of both host and virus is also providing novel insights into viral transmission and innate immune responses. This Keystone Symposia meeting will use diverse disciplines to promote further insights into the dynamic interplay between the virus and the host in areas of pathogenesis, mucosal biology, the roles of viral and host genes, and viral latency. Understanding these issues is critical for the design and development of an effective vaccine and the next generation of antiviral agents.

Where: Whistler Conference Centre,Whistler BC

When: March 20-25,2011
